I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to read Maddy’s story. Even though she’s as prickly as a porcupine, I’ve always had a soft spot for her. Then, when she really seemed to relate to her oldest brother Gage in Last Chance Rebel, I knew there was way more to her than even her siblings could guess. So her real story (which we know half of already) came as no surprise. Instead I was blown away by the back story on Sam.
Of course, Sam was more of a mystery going into this book. He was mentioned a time or two in the Copper Ridge series and we got to see him a bit more in his brother’s story in the Copper Ridge: Desire series. The pain this man has held onto is unimaginable. It takes quite a bit of the book before we get his true story but it’s worth the wait. He puts so much on his own shoulders and holds so much inside.
Maddy’s dad is a much-hated character by me. When we get the full story of Maddy’s “incident” from when she was a teenager I despised him all the more. How any of his children turned out able to have friendships let alone relationships is beyond me.
Just as in the first book of this series, this book is a bit shorter than we usually get from Maisey Yates. It works well with the timeline Maddy and Sam set for themselves though so it doesn’t feel like there’s anything missing.
I simply adored Maddy’s strength. Not only in dealing with her past issues, but her bravery in dealing with Sam and their feelings. She is no shrinking violet and she stand up for what she believes is true and right.
Now that all of the West children have had their stories told I’m super curious to see how the rest of that story will play out. I find it hard to believe we’ve heard the last of them in Copper Creek!
