From the moment I learned about the car accident in Garrett, I knew this would be a tough story to read.  Through both books Alex and Garrett, whenever we’d see Zack and Gina they were portrayed as the perfect little cute couple.  And they were!  That’s what makes it all so hard.  Somehow, Sawyer Bennett got the point across that Zack did love Gina…deeply.  That they did have a wonderful relationship.  But it was totally different than the relationship he starts with Kate.  And that’s okay.

Kate is wonderful.  I think there are so many women out there today that are Kates.  Whether we learn to hide our body, our beauty, our brains…there is something many women go through at a critical age that makes them feel less than.  I must hide my breasts or I will get unwanted attention.  Or I must accentuate my breasts so I’m not thought of as dowdy.  I must act like I don’t know as much as the boy next to me or he won’t like me.  It goes on and on and it breaks my heart.  Kate is lucky enough that she never doubts her brain, and Zack helps her to stop doubting the rest.  He helps her to embrace her beauty and to know it’s okay to be desirable.  It’s not giving permission to anyone to act any way toward you.  It’s being able to be comfortable in your own skin.

As for Zack, what a great guy.  There are so many times I could have gotten angry at him yet I know everything he did was to protect his son or even Kate.  He constantly called himself selfish, and he was in one respect.  But he also cares so deeply about those around him.  When he acts inappropriately he not only comes to the realization on his own, but he apologizes.  It’s not always enough in this case, but it’s good that he still does it.

I love that the author has Kate acknowledge that she’s not sure she can do the “just sex” thing.  Usually characters that are hot for each other just outright lie and say yes so they can get to the fun stuff.  But Kate acknowledges that she doesn’t know how things will play out as they go along.  She also gets Zack to admit that, even though it’s not a typical relationship, that’s still what their arrangement is – a relationship.  It’s a bit different than these stories usually go so I liked seeing the honesty between them.

Of course, we get to meet more players for the Cold Fury so the series can go on.  As a mom, I cannot even imagine how the story of Ryker is going to play out.  We’ve barely met him and I already want to strangle his ex-wife.  I guess that means it’ll be a good story!  I can’t wait.
