Contemporary Romance = 17
With the holidays behind me, I was able to get a lot more reading in last month than in December. Of course the majority of my books were in the contemporary romance genre. There was quite an even division of sub-genre in January with Sports, Western, and Erotica all being evenly split when there was a sub-genre listed. I did read one book that was classified as YA but was a strong leaning of New Adult as there were many themes not appropriate for the younger YA reader. If you have an older teen in your life, I strongly recommend Trust by Kylie Scott. Since everyone matures at different times I would also suggest reading it yourself first. You won’t regret doing so as it’s a wonderful story. And it could prevent you from sharing the book with someone who may not have the maturity level to handle it yet.
I only had one 5 star read in January with Rough, Raw, and Ready by Lorelei James. Interestingly enough, that wasn’t necessarily my favorite book of the month. I had a lot of 4 and 4.5 star reads and I listed Dirty for Me by Jackie Ashenden (which I gave 4.5 stars) as another favorite in January. Although there was something about it that kept me from giving it the full 5 stars, the story blew me away and the writing is outstanding.
I finally got around to reading a couple of my library books in January, although I still have plenty more to get to…including more that I had to renew since I have a harder time getting to my “real” books. I actually purchased a couple of the books I read in January in the same month!
Net Galley = 3
MCL = 9
Library = 2
Kindle Lending Library = 1
Amazon = 3
Unsurprisingly, I read over 1000 more pages in January than in December. To be exact, I read 5,501 pages with only one book under 200 pages. Fake Wife came in at 190 pages as opposed to my longest read, Their Rebellious Submissive by Nicole Edwards, which came in at 433 pages. Oddly enough, I had four books in January with the exact page count of 352. Odder yet, they were read one after the other. I told my husband I should have played the 3-digit lottery with that number!
There were no books below 3 stars, and I consider 3 stars a solid read. So I had a great reading month. In fact, there was only one at 3 stars and three at 3.5 stars, the rest were all 4 stars and above.
As I mentioned earlier, I actually bought 2 books in January that were read in January. Of course, there was the pre-order of Melissa Foster’s Bayside Passions as well as a pre-order of Nicole Edwards’ Their Rebellious Submissive. Both of these author’s get pre-ordered as soon as I find out a book is on the way.
Total books purchased in January = 3
Total money spent on books in January = $14.97
Total money spent on books read in January = $9.97
You may have noticed that my books acquired was quite a bit lower this month with only 89. So I only got 59 through Book Bub this month. Part of the reason for the lower numbers is there were a lot of books available for free that I already have, which was the same the month before. (It’s funny that I say “only” and “low” when I’m getting tons of books for free!) I’m sure I’ll continue to run into this since I’ve been stringent with checking my freebies on a daily basis for well over a year. I picked Punishment by Scott J. Holliday for my January Kindle First pick. I got 3 books from Net Galley, 1 from Just Add Spice, 9 from Red Feather, 4 through Shifted Sheets, and 8 from author emails.
Here’s a breakdown of January’s books by genre:
1 chick lit
66 contemporary romance
2 historical romance
1 motorcycle club
11 new adult
1 science fiction
