I usually love, love, love Sawyer Bennett’s books. They suck me in and don’t let me go until I’ve read the last page. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen with this particular book. You may think it’s because it’s book #7 of this series and I haven’t read the others. That’s not so. I didn’t even realize it was the middle of a series because this story is truly a book that can work as a standalone. There just wasn’t that extra something that kept me engaged.
Now, that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy this story. I truly did. Ford and Viveka are both great characters and their chemistry is wonderful. Ford is so thoughtful and caring even though that’s kind of the opposite of what your first impression would be. Viveka has so much grit and determination you can’t help but admire her. Their chemistry is easy and laid back even with the explosive sex they have. There’s a comfort in their coupling, and that’s not a bad thing.
There were some editing issues that drove me batty. But honestly, they weren’t that bad. It’s just my bad habit of picking up every single misplaced punctuation mark or misused word. I’m sure there are very few people who picked up on the things I did. I suppose those few things could have taken me out of the story more than I realized and therefore messed with the flow. I’m just not sure what my issues were.
This was still a fantastic read. I love the title and the play on words. I love this author. As you can see, it’s still getting quite a decent rating from me. I’m just used to giving her 4 and 5 stars for her stories. I really can’t get enough of her Cold Fury series. So, if you’re a new reader to Sawyer Bennett I would advise reading Alex first. And then maybe a bit further into that series. Then circle around back to this one. If you’re already a fan of this author, you’ll enjoy this story. It’s just not as explosive as the others.
