Let’s start with some semantics. This story is listed as book 5 in this series, but its timeline starts during book 3, Speechless, and ends after book 4, Harmless. Trust me, it’s less confusing than it sounds. It was written after book 4 and I believe the proper place to read this story is after book 4. And unlike with a lot of this author’s other works, which can all be read as standalone books although you miss out on so much if you do that, this story probably wouldn’t hold up as well as a standalone. For one, it’s a shorter story. Also, a lot of the emotion comes from the fact that we already know these characters.
The Pier 70 series is really a M/M series, but fans (myself included) really wanted to know what happened with Milly and AJ. Ms. Edwards was kind enough to oblige us. These types of books, the shorter stories that are written to satisfy the rabid fans, can go horribly wrong at times. I just recently reviewed such a story where I felt the author phoned it in. Not so in this case. The author really did a great job of giving me all the feels…including getting frustrated with AJ and Milly and their lack of communication!!!
One of the most amazing things about this story is the true friendship that develops with the characters. Them both being so darn stubborn really forced them into a caring and mutually beneficial friendship that will be a solid foundation to any relationship they have with one another for the rest of their lives. It was a beautiful thing.
Really, Nicole Edwards does not often have a misstep. At least in my opinion. Her stories always suck me in and hang on until the very last page. I’m glad she was able to give us the Milly/AJ story so many of us wanted.
