TTT: Favorite Book Quotes

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. There is a new topic each week for bloggers to join in with their own top ten. If you’re looking for some new or different book blogs to read, hop on over to her site and check out some of the links.

I had plans for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, then I ran out of time. I’ve been even busier than usual and hardly have time to get to my reading, which is a shame. But I’ve really missed doing TTT posts so I was bound and determined to do two weeks in a row. So this is a simplified version of what I had been planning.

The theme is favorite book quotes. It can be favorite quotes about books or quote from books or anything in between. I’m mixing it up this week with all sorts of quotes from different types of sources. Basically, because of my time crunch, I’m hopping over to my Goodreads page and looking at what quotes I’ve saved in the past and laying them on you here.

I’m starting off with a quote I love so much it’s actually part of my signature on my personal email account.

“Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home.”

― Anna Quindlen, How Reading Changed My Life

“Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn’t carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.”

― Stephen King

“Blessed are the sleepy ones: for they shall soon nod off.”

― Nietzsche, Friedrich, Thus Spoke Zarathustra

“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.”

― Maya Angelou

“I never use the words HUMANIST or HUMANITARIAN, as it seems to me that to be human is to be capable of the most heinous crimes in nature.”

― Gregory Maguire, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

“Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the Universe than we do now.”

― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

“I’ve always envied people who sleep easily. Their brains must be cleaner, the floorboards of the skull well swept, all the little monsters closed up in a steamer trunk at the foot of the bed.”

― David Benioff, City of Thieves

“We never know the quality of someone else’s life, though we seldom resist the temptation to assume and pass judgement.”

― Tami Hoag, Dark Horse

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.”

― Alice Walker

And finally, in the words of Arthur the Aardvark (more specifically, his creator Marc Brown)…

I’ve gotta say, it was fun revisiting some old favorites. I had to hold myself back from listing more than ten. I cannot wait to read what everyone else has as their favorites this week.

About Cheri

I'm the mom of two boys and wife to my high school sweetheart. Our oldest, Josh, is living at home while working and paying off student loans. Our youngest, Griffin recently left his active duty Army job and is now National Guard here at home. He moved back to Michigan with his wife Kirsten and our beautiful granddaughter Hazel. I work part time and try to fit as much reading into my life as possible.

  1. Haha love that last quote! But that quote about people who sleep really speaks to me because as someone who has been unable to sleep more than 4/5 hours every night for the past 3 years, the struggle is real 😂

I hear ya! I’m the type that can’t fall asleep for hours after I lay down even when I’m dead tired. I’ve always been this way, that’s why this quote jumped out at me when I saw it years and years ago.

I couldn’t agree with Stephen King more.

    My post .

  3. Totally agree with Stephen King!

Love the last quote! Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

  5. Ohhhh–I love the Anna Quindlen quote! Good work!

  6. I absolutely love that quote from Wicked. Gregory Maguire is one of my favorite writers, and I think his books are full of delicious quotes, but I think you’re the first person I’ve seen include him for this week’s theme.
