Welcome to June! Summer is (unofficially) here! Time for reading in my hammock.
Just a couple of days ago I had not idea what I wanted to share with you today for Friday Favorites. My thoughts were all over the place. I subscribe to a lot of different podcast, so every day I log onto my podcast app and see what’s new. I add those that are “can’t miss” to my list (that way they don’t disappear on me after a set number of days if I haven’t had a chance to listen yet), remove the ones that don’t sound interesting, and otherwise do a quick organize of what’s what. Being an avid romance fan I noticed an episode titled The Clinch from the podcast 99% Invisible, but thought it unlikely they did a podcast about romance covers. Well, I was wrong. Here’s the description of that episode…
After Producer Katie Mingle’s mom wrote a romance novel, Katie set out to understand the romance genre and its classic covers. There was a lot to unpack.
Hmmm. I couldn’t tell what direction this was going to go. Was this going to be yet another disparaging take on the romance genre? Was one of my go-to podcasts going to tick me off with their “fresh take” on romance and romance fans? I was going to have to listen either way because I was beyond curious at this point, I was just hoping the episode wouldn’t sour me on my man Roman Mars. Within 5 minutes, I knew I’d be sharing this one with you guys. That’s when romance writer, reader, and podcast host Sarah MacLean was introduced and I knew the subject would be in good hands. I’m a huge fan of Sarah’s Fated Mates podcast and she always has wonderful and intuitive insight when it comes to romance and everything surrounding the genre.
So what is the clinch? I urge you to listen to the episode to find out. If you are already familiar with the clinch, you should still give a listen. And you can know going in, the people over at 99PI treat the subject with respect. Let me be clear, I didn’t doubt they’d be respectful. I just didn’t know if they’d truly have an understanding of the subject matter. They included in their reporting others from the industry, not only Sarah MacLean. I think they covered the topic quite well and it will be interesting and enjoyable for those who read romance and those who don’t. And you may even learn a thing or two, I know I did.
Here are links to a few of my other favorites from 99% invisible:
Those are just a few. If you haven’t listened to this podcast yet, you’re missing out. Roman and his crew always find a new and interesting angle to look at each topic they cover.
