Friday Favorites – 8/6/21

I’m going to make this short and sweet because, as I type this up, I’m watching the Olympic Sports Climbing Women’s Finals. Yep, I’m doing another Olympic-themed Friday Favorites.

I’ll be honest and tell you that, in my head, I made fun of this sport before watching any of the events. Not because of the sport itself, but because of the name. To me, it sounds like when a person who doesn’t regularly watch “traditional” sports says sportsball instead of football or baseball. So it really had me snickering each time I saw the name Sports Climbing.

Even though it’s wrapping up as I type this, I highly recommend you go back and watch these competitions. You would think it would get repetitive, but it doesn’t. Each athlete has their own way of tackling these walls. I’m not going to bore you with all of the particulars, but the basics are that there are three portions to this combined competition. Speed, Bouldering, and Lead. The way they score the sport seems complicated when you first start to watch, but the commentators on the feed I’ve been watching do a great job of explaining everything. (I’ve been using the NBC Sports app on my smart tv.)

I actually started with watching the men’s qualifying event as a replay and I was hooked. Qualifiers are long, but in hindsight I’m glad I watched them. They helped me to understand the sport so much better because they are run a bit differently than the finals. I then watched the men’s finals live, then went back and watched the women’s qualifying event yesterday. And here I am, fully invested in these ladies. Their strength of body and mind. There is so much brain power used in this sport! The patience they have to draw on in order to succeed. It’s all so fascinating.

Now I’m going to go back to rooting for the American athlete in this final, Brooke Raboutou. But I’m really rooting for all of these women. And watching Janja Garnbret from Slovenia, who I’m quite sure is going to win gold, is like watching a lovely ballet. She is just amazing.

Trust me. Go check out Sports Climbing.
