Friday Favorites – 9/24/21

There was no question in my mind about what I’d feature as my Friday Favorite today. Last week Lil Nas X released his album Montero. I know there’s a good chance anyone who follows me is not in the demographic to know who Lil Nas X is or what kind of music he puts out. I believe his album is being categorized as pop, and there are definitely some rap songs on there. But none of that is what is important to me. What I love about all of this is the musician himself.

You guys, he announced his album’s release date as if it was a baby’s due date. He created a baby registry where each song on the album has a charity attached so you can buy “gifts” by donating. He’s black, queer, and wonderfully brazen. He tells the world to be who they are and fuck anyone who tells them it’s not right. Lil Nas X, at the tender young age of 22 (younger than both of my kids!), is proving himself to be a leader and role model.

On top of that, I actually love his music. It’s catchy and touching and, depending on the song, brings a smile to my face or tears to my eyes. The first time I heard Sun Goes Down my mama heart just broke. I simultaneously want to give this young man a hug and comfort, and to cheer him on.

I first heard of Lil Nas X in 2019 when his song Old Town Road was pulled from the Billboard’s country charts as “not fitting the genre”. The hullabaloo on that had me curious and I enjoyed the song quite a bit and his video with Billy Ray Cyrus was fun. (Yes, that Billy Ray Cyrus.) It seems to me that everyone always wants to put this guy in a mold, and he doesn’t fit one mold. Do any of us? Instead of tucking tale, he came back stronger than ever. He’s not just one thing. In fact, days after his album released I saw a video of him singing Jolene making the rounds. (As my daughter-in-law commented on that video, I really need to see him sing it with Dolly.)

If you don’t already know about Lil Nas X and the things he’s been up to, I strongly encourage you to look him up. He leaves a path of controversy behind him. Not because he’s doing anything wrong, but because he refuses to conform. His SNL appearance and pretty much every video he’s released has people clutching their pearl. For no other reason than he’s being himself. Don’t just write this young entertainer off as one of many. He’s got a huge heart and tons of grit. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.
